Les Feldick Bible Study

Which empire does Christ destroy first at His coming?

At His Second Coming, Christ first destroys the revived Roman Empire. The context identifies this as the empire contemporary with that day, pictured by the iron and clay feet of the image. It is the final Gentile system, associated with Western Europe, that is smashed before the earlier empires' remains are dealt with.

Les explains that the image's feet of iron and clay show where the smashing begins. Since a roller would hit the feet first, Christ at His Second Coming destroys first the empire contemporary with that day—the revived Roman Empire. This final Gentile system is associated with Western Europe, which the context says will become the empire of the world. Within the revived Roman Empire are remains of earlier empires: Babylon's banking and business practices, Medes and Persians' attributes, and Greek culture that Rome integrated. So the first empire destroyed is the revived Roman Empire, not the earlier empires whose remnants it contains.
