What does 'I will exalt my throne above the stars of God' mean?
The phrase expresses Lucifer's ambition to raise his own throne and authority above the angelic host. Since stars symbolize angels in Scripture, his "I will" declares rebellion against God, seeking a higher position than the angels and ultimately to be like the Most High.
Les teaches that this statement in Isaiah 14 comes from Lucifer, the fallen angel and covering cherub. It is the evidence of what he said in his heart: "I will." He first says, "I will ascend into heaven. I will exalt my throne above the stars of God." Les explains that stars in Scripture symbolize angels, so Lucifer wanted to exalt his position above the angelic host. His many "I wills" show total rebellion against his Creator. He continues, "I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north," and "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds." Finally, he says, "I will be like the most high." The Most High is the God of creation. Thus the phrase means Lucifer sought to lift his throne and rule above the angels in defiant ambition against God.
