What heaven is Deuteronomy 4:19 talking about with the sun, moon, and stars?
Deuteronomy 4:19 refers to the second heaven, which is the region of space where the sun, moon, and stars are found. It is not the first heaven, the atmosphere where birds fly, and it is not the third heaven, the abode of God.
Les explains that Scripture lays out a first heaven, a second heaven, and a third heaven. The first heaven is the area where birds fly, or the atmosphere. The second heaven is the area of the stars, or space. Deuteronomy 4:19 speaks of lifting up the eyes to heaven and seeing the sun, the moon, the stars, and all the host of heaven. Les says this is not the heaven normally thought of as the abode of God, but it is the second heaven. It is not the area where birds fly, and it is certainly not the abode of God, so it is the second heaven, the area of space with the sun, moon, and stars. Paul then goes on to delineate the third heaven as paradise in II Corinthians.
And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.
