Why did God ask Adam 'Where art thou?' in the Garden?

God asked 'Where art thou?' not because He did not know Adam's location, but to show that sin had separated Adam and Eve from Him. Before sin, they fellowshipped with God daily; after sin, He could not fellowship with them, and they were lost. Adam should have answered, 'We're lost.'

Les explains that redemption is not a Pauline invention; it goes back to the Garden of Eden. When God placed Adam and Eve there, they were His and fellowshipped with Him every day. But sin came in, and He lost them because He could not fellowship with them in their sin. That is why Les thinks God went out into the Garden—not because He did not know where they were, but to show that they were now so separated from Him. He never had to ask 'Where art thou?' before; as soon as sin separated them and He lost them, He could ask. Adam should have answered, 'We're lost.'

Genesis 3:9
