Why don't believers have to live in constant turmoil?

Because believers are justified by faith, God has reckoned the old sin nature dead and declared them just as if they had never sinned. They now have peace with God through Jesus Christ, are no longer enemies, and need not live in fear that God will zap, disown, or cast them out.

Les teaches that the unbeliever has never experienced peace, so it is not listed among his activities; Scripture pictures such lives as waves roaring and filled with turmoil. For the believer, Romans 5:1 says, 'Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.' Justification puts the believer back like Adam before the fall: God reckons the old sin nature dead and gone and declares the person just as if he had never sinned, with the slate wiped clean. Since justification brings peace with God, the believer is no longer an enemy but is now His, able to enjoy His fellowship moment by moment regardless of how well he has behaved. That abiding peace, plus the peace of God mentioned with Philippians chapter 4, means believers do not have to live in constant turmoil or fear that God will zap, disown, or cast them out.
