Are Christians free to do whatever they want since they are at liberty?
Scripture teaches that grace does not give license to sin. Paul asks, 'Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid!' Those dead to sin cannot live in it any longer. Christian liberty is not freedom to go contrary to God's Word, but freedom to live as believers, determining behavior before the Lord in areas of opinion.
Les teaches that Romans 5:21 presents grace reigning through righteousness unto eternal life by Jesus Christ, and Romans 6:1 follows with Paul asking, 'What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?' Paul still had in mind Romans 3, where he was slanderously reported as teaching that people could do as they pleased. The question is whether we should test God's offer of grace by seeing how much we can do and get away with it. Of course not; God forbid. Verse 2 adds, 'How shall we that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?' Since believers are dead to sin, old Adam, they cannot live in it. So yes, we are set free and at liberty, yet not liberty to go contrary to the Word of God. Les stresses that in areas of opinion, something may not strike me as intrinsically sinful but to someone else it may be. Here liberty comes in: you must determine between yourself and the Lord what your behavior will be in certain areas. Giving is one example.
