Can you steal from, gossip about, or covet what belongs to someone you love?
No, these actions are incompatible with love. Under grace, when the Holy Spirit empowers believers, love becomes the motivating power, and loving another fulfills the law. Therefore stealing from, bearing false witness or gossiping about, and coveting what a loved one owns do not fit; they automatically fall away when love operates.
Les teaches from Paul writing to believers that this area of Scripture is everyday practicality, not pie in the sky. Because believers are under grace, the Holy Spirit empowers them, and love becomes the whole motivating power behind everything they do, so they automatically fulfill the Law. He asks whether anyone can steal from somebody they love and says he cannot comprehend it. He also asks whether one can bear false witness or gossip about somebody they love, and answers no. He asks whether one can covet something a loved one owns and wish it were theirs instead, and answers no. Going through the whole gamut of the Ten Commandments, when love is operating, they all automatically fall away and no longer have to be taught and drilled.
For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
