Les Feldick Bible Study

Can you break any of the other nine commandments without first coveting?

No. Coveting is at the root of breaking every one of the commandments. As Paul references 'Thou shalt not covet,' desire precedes every violation. Therefore, a person cannot break any of the other nine commandments without first coveting, and that is why Paul makes reference to it.

Les explains that in Romans 7 Paul asks whether the law is sin and answers, God forbid. Paul says he had not known sin except by the law, and he had not known lust, that is, desire, except the law had said, 'Thou shalt not covet.' Les asks people to mull over whether it is possible to break a single one of the other nine commandments without first coveting. Those who have thought about it know you cannot. Coveting is at the root of breaking every one of the commandments, which is why Paul makes reference to it. Les anticipates the objection about taking the name of the Lord in vain: how can a man who curses and swears be coveting? He says if you know anything about psychology, it is easy, and then asks why people curse and swear.

Romans 7:7

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
