What is the difference between the Jerusalem that is above and the earthly Jerusalem?
The Jerusalem above is spiritual, heavenly, and free, unlike the earthly Jerusalem where the temple still offers sacrifices. The Father has made believers partakers of the saints' inheritance in light, delivered them from darkness, and translated them into the heavenly kingdom of His Son, where their head and citizenship are.
Les explains that the contrast is between Jerusalem which is above and the earthly Jerusalem, where the temple is still cranking out her sacrifices. The Jerusalem above is a spiritual setting in the heavenlies, and it is free. He then takes listeners to Colossians 1:12-13, where Paul writes of giving thanks to the Father, who has made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light, delivered us from the power of darkness, and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son. Since that kingdom is in heaven, believers have a heavenly base of operations: the head of the body is in heaven, and they are citizens. He next points to Philippians chapter 3.
