What were the Galatians doing according to Paul?

According to Paul, the Galatians were going back into legalism and law-keeping, giving up their freedom and joy, and allowing themselves to be wrapped up again in bondage. They were attempting to keep the commandments rather than resting in the finished work of Christ, who paid it all.

Les explains that legalism puts people crawling in the dust, begging that somehow they can make it. The Galatians, by contrast, were going back into that stuff, giving up their freedom and joy and letting themselves get wrapped up again in legalism and law-keeping. Paul asks how they could desire to again be in bondage. Les says this is hard to understand, yet it describes the human race, which grovels in legalism and good works, trying to keep the commandments and not realizing that when Christ died, He paid it all.
