Should I enjoy being with God's people to know I'm saved?
Yes. Enjoying fellowship with God's people is presented as one indication of true salvation. If someone does not enjoy being with believers, Scripture-based self-examination is urged, because something may be wrong. This evidence accompanies a hunger for God's Word and enjoyment of prayer, showing the Holy Spirit's leading.
Les teaches that this is part of self-examination: How can I know that I'm truly saved? He lists several indicators. Number one, do you have a hunger for the Word of God? If not, he doubts whether there is any true salvation, because when we become a child of God we hunger after His Word. Number two, do you enjoy being with God's people? If you don't, then there is something wrong, and he would re-examine his so-called salvation experience. He also asks whether you enjoy prayer time and taking your needs to the Lord; if not, he doubts there is any relationship there. Les says it is a thing of the heart, and no one can look on the heart, but you can self-examine. He refers to Peter writing, make your call in an election sure, meaning not to work a little harder but to examine yourself in the light of Scripture—whether you are depending on something you have done or on solid faith in the Gospel wherein the power of God has been exercised. When that happens, the Holy Spirit comes into our life and begins to lead and guide and direct, so we don't have to have rules and regulations; the Spirit does that. Believers are led by the Spirit of God, one indication of true salvation, while lost people are not led by the Holy Spirit.
