If Christians are sons of God through faith, what does that make them?

Being sons of God through saving faith makes believers children of God and therefore heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. This inheritance is not from a rich grandfather or corporation president but is far greater; as joint heirs, they share rights to the property with Christ.

Les teaches from Romans 8 that if believers are children of God—true sons by virtue of saving faith—then they are heirs. They are not heirs of some rich grandfather or a corporation president with millions of shares, but something far greater: heirs of God. He tightens it further: they are joint heirs with Jesus Christ. Les illustrates joint heirship with a home or property owned by two people; both have rights to it, and if one dies, it belongs to the one left behind. This joint heirship is part of the Christian experience, and it may mean suffering with Christ and also experiencing glorification with Him. Galatians verse 7 agrees: no more a slave but a son, one in full heirship, an heir of God through Christ.

Galatians 4:7

Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.

Romans 8:17

And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

If we are children of God, we are heirs, and specifically joint heirs with Christ, not just ordinary heirs hoping for a small portion of the inheritance.
