How do believers come to call God Abba Father?
At salvation, God sends the Spirit of His Son into the believer’s heart. Through the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit, and on the basis of Christ’s finished work rather than personal merit, believers receive the full privilege of approaching God and calling Him Abba, Father.
Les explains that the unsaved world cannot truly approach God as Heavenly Father, but believers can come right into the throne room and call Him Father. As Paul teaches, they come with all petitions—not on their own merit but because of the finished work of the cross. Because of salvation, God immediately sends the Spirit of His Son into their hearts, and through the Holy Spirit’s leading and guiding they have every right to call Him Abba, Father. Paul then adds “wherefore,” showing that believers are no longer servants or slaves, nor little children under tutors, but full-grown sons in partnership with the Father.
