Why do believers lack root and their faith not hold when they are taught deep revelations without foundational background?

Believers lack root because they are taken into the further revelations of Scripture without any concept of what went before. Expecting deep truth without foundational learning is like expecting a child to do calculus without arithmetic. Since learning is a slow process of repetition, missing background leaves ignorance, so faith does not hold.

Les explains this by comparing it to a child jumping into university calculus before ever learning arithmetic. That is what happens when people are taken right into the further revelations of Scripture without any concept of what went before, and then we wonder why they have no root and why their faith does not hold. He points to Romans 15:4, where Paul says the things written aforetime in the Old Testament were written for our learning, not for salvation and not for doctrine. The Gospels are also hooked to the Old Testament economy. Les teaches that this learning process is usually slow, not fast, and it takes patience and comfort, along with repetition, repetition, repetition, before moving on a little deeper and repeating some more.
