Why do believers lose faith when they face overwhelming circumstances?

Overwhelming circumstances, calamity, and accidents can make believers feel God is absent, prompting the human mind to ask, “Where is God?” When promised help seems delayed and nothing happens, faith can be crushed under the circumstances, leading them to doubt His presence and activity.

Les explains that even in a fast-paced culture, it is easy to lose faith. When things overwhelm us, we may suddenly think, “Where is God?” and feel we cannot sense His presence, asking why these things are falling in on us. Calamity and accidents strike, and the first thing the human mind says is, “Where is God?” Then faith can literally get crushed under the circumstances. He points to Abraham, whose promises began in Ur when he was about 50, who did not leave Haran until 75, did not receive Ishmael until near 80, and finally saw the promised child when he was 100 and Sarah was 90. Abraham had almost 50 years to sweat the promises while nothing happened. Les says he cannot blame Abraham for listening to Sarah and having a child by a slave girl, after all God was not doing anything. But this is where we often come from, saying, “God, You’re not doing anything.” We must sit back and say this is the way God works: His wheels grind slowly but surely. Finally, after 50 years of promises, the child comes.
