Why do people stay blind to the truth of the gospel?
People stay blind to the gospel because God has kept His truth secret and has not revealed it to them. The Old Testament saints and the Twelve did not understand, and today many remain blind until God, by sovereign grace, opens their eyes; then they become responsible.
Les explains that the truth of the gospel was kept secret in the mind of God, so the Old Testament saints could not know it because God did not reveal it to them. Even the Twelve did not understand that Jesus would die and rise again; after the cross Peter said, “I go fishing,” because everything seemed hopeless. Les applies this same pattern today: many people are kept blind to the truth of the Gospel until God opens their eyes. The moment He opens their eyes, they become intensely responsible because that is His sovereign grace. Abraham also did not fully understand the Gospel preached to him; he only had a concept that God was going to send a Redeemer.
