Why did Peter later waver if he said in Acts 15:11 that Jews are saved by grace like Gentiles?

Peter later wavered because he forgot most of what he said in that verse in the years that followed. He still could not give in to the fact that Paul's gospel had now superseded his position, so his earlier confession of salvation by grace did not keep him from wavering.

Les explains that in Acts 15 Peter recalled how God chose that Gentiles should hear the gospel by his mouth and believe, and that God purified their hearts by faith. Peter then warned against putting a yoke on the disciples that neither the fathers nor they could bear, and he confessed that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ they would be saved even as the Gentiles. Yet Les teaches that Peter probably forgot 90% of what he said in that verse in the years to come, because he still could not give in to the fact that Paul's Gospel had now superseded his position. His later wavering is thus tied to his reluctance to accept Paul's gospel and position.

Acts 15:11
