Why did Peter later seem to go back on his statement in Acts 15:11?

Peter later appeared to contradict his Acts 15:11 statement because he forgot much of it and could not fully accept that Paul's gospel had superseded his own position. He still struggled to yield to the change, so his behavior reflected lingering attachment to his former standing.

Les explains that in Acts 15 Peter recalled how God chose him to bring the Gospel to Gentiles, that they believed, and that God purified their hearts by faith. Peter asked why they would test God by putting a yoke on believers that neither the fathers nor they could bear, and he affirmed salvation by grace. But Les suggests that in later years Peter forgot 90% of what he said in that verse, because he still could not give in to the fact that Paul's Gospel had now superseded his position.

Acts 15:11

But we believe that through the grace of the LORD Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

Galatians 2:11

But when Peter was come to Antioch, I withstood him to the face, because he was to be blamed.
