How did Peter come to Paul's defense in the Acts 15 dispute?

Peter defended Paul by recalling his earlier experience at Cornelius's house about fourteen years before. He testified that God saved a Gentile apart from Judaism, without circumcision, Law-keeping, repentance, or water baptism; Gentiles were saved even before Peter got that far.

Les explains that in the Acts 15 controversy, Peter and the eleven at Jerusalem were in conflict with Paul over Gentiles being saved apart from Judaism, without circumcision and without being commanded to keep the Law. Pharisees who believed demanded that Gentile believers be circumcised and keep the Law of Moses. After a great confrontation, Peter finally came to Paul's defense by remembering about fourteen years earlier, when he had gone to the house of Cornelius. There he had witnessed that God would save a Gentile without ascribing to Judaism, without repentance and water baptism; they were saved even before Peter even got that far.
