Why did Jesus' death on the cross fulfill the demands of the Law?

The cross fulfilled the Law's demands because the work of the cross was love—love epitomized. It was God's love for mankind that nailed Him to the cross, and by that love He fulfilled the Law. Scripture says the one who loves another has already fulfilled the Law.

Les teaches that Romans 13 ties love directly to the Law: “he that loveth another hath already fulfilled the law.” The work of the Cross was love; it was love epitomized. It was God's love for mankind that nailed Him to the Cross, and as a result He fulfilled the demands of the Law. The commandments—thou shalt not commit adultery, thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not covet—are briefly comprehended in “thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” This is not a legalistic, pressurized system. Believers have been set free, but that is not licensed. Under this Law of Love, they no longer want to break these commandments, and the indwelling Holy Spirit directs their thinking and actions, though they are not sinless or perfect.

Romans 13:8

Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
