Why is it not appropriate to refer to the Lord as simply Jesus in this age of grace?
In this age of grace, after the resurrection, it is not appropriate to refer to the Lord merely as Jesus because that was His name of the flesh in humiliation. The context places that earthly name in His humiliation and says this post-resurrection era should not use it alone.
Les explains this while discussing the stoning of Stephen. The passage records Stephen calling upon God, saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit,” and asking the Lord not to lay this sin to their charge (s218–s222). Les then notes a listener’s pastor’s sermon that he agreed with explicitly. One point was that in this age of grace, in the post-resurrection era, it is not appropriate to refer to the Lord as simply Jesus. The reason given is that Jesus was His name of the flesh in humiliation (s236–s242).
