Who said in 1971 that he could never envision the church's apostasy short of the tribulation?
The statement was made by the president of Moody Bible Institute in 1971. The transcript identifies him only as possibly Dr. Sweeting or Dr. Culbertson, since the speaker was unsure which one. J. Vernon McGee recounted the conversation in a booklet copyrighted that year.
Les explains that someone sent him a booklet by the old radio pastor J. Vernon McGee, who had gone to be with the Lord. The booklet was copyrighted, he thinks, in 1971, and McGee was rehearsing a conversation he had with the man who was then president of Moody Bible Institute. Les notes that he thinks it was Dr. Sweeting or Culbertson, but he does not remember which one. During a Bible conference in Los Angeles, McGee and Dr. Sweeting and a couple of other well-known theologians were visiting, and this Moody president made the statement. Remembering the time element—1971—the man said he could never envision the apostasy of the Church at that time. He had no idea the Church would be into such apostasy short of being in the tribulation. Les observes that was over twenty years ago and asks what that man would think today, suggesting they could not handle it. He says believers have been programmed to see all this creeping in and just roll with it, but we are in such a state of apostasy that it is alarming. He wonders why people cannot see what these verses say, noting they are under condemnation of being accursed for perverting the Gospel.
