What did Roman citizens do to fill their leisure, and what did it produce?

Roman citizens did no work, since captives and slaves performed the labor. To fill their leisure hours, they concocted entertainment and spectacles. That produced the Colosseum, lions, the feeding of Christians, gladiators, and all the rest, and it also gave rise to their implacable, indescribable immorality.

Les teaches that Rome was almost totally given over to the welfare system. The only people who worked were captives from Rome's military excursions, whom they brought in and put to work as slaves. The Roman citizens did nothing, so to satisfy all their leisure hours they had to concoct something to keep them satisfied. That gave rise to the Colosseum, the lions, the feeding of the Christians, the gladiators, and all the rest. It also gave rise to their implacable immorality, which was beyond description.
