Les Feldick Bible Study

What was ancient Rome's economy like according to Les in the Galatians study?

Ancient Rome's economy was almost entirely a welfare system. The only people who worked were captives from military campaigns, brought in and put to work as slaves. Roman citizens did nothing, and their leisure gave rise to the Colosseum, gladiators, and immorality.

Les explains that Rome was almost totally given over to the welfare system. The only people who worked were the captives of Rome's military excursions, brought in and put to work as slaves. Roman citizens did nothing, and to satisfy their leisure hours they concocted entertainments, giving rise to the Colosseum, the lions, the feeding of the Christians, and the gladiators. This also gave rise to implacable immorality beyond description. Les ties this to Paul's marvel that the Galatian believers were so soon removed from the Grace of Christ into another Gospel.
