Was Paul in the body or out of the body when he was caught up to the third heaven?
The context indicates Paul was out of the body when caught up to the third heaven. His body was the one lying outside Derbe after being stoned and dragged out for dead, while his soul and spirit took flight and were caught up to the third heaven.
Les teaches that the stoning at Derbe fits chronologically with Paul’s experience described in II Corinthians. Paul was probably about 41 or 42 AD on that first missionary journey, and II Corinthians was written about 60. Les explains that when Paul was stoned at Derbe and dragged out for dead, he had this tremendous opportunity to see the glories of Heaven. Reading II Corinthians’ phrase “whether in the body, or out of the body,” Les says it is pretty obvious Paul was out of the body; the body was the one lying outside Derbe, and the soul and spirit took flight, so that “such a one was caught up to the third heaven.”
I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.
