Why do we teach Sunday school and home Bible classes?
The reason such classes are taught is that God has chosen to use human instruments to proclaim His Word. Scripture asks how people can believe unless someone proclaims, and the Ethiopian eunuch told Philip he could not understand unless another man explained it to him.
Les explains that God has seen fit to use human instruments, so teaching Sunday school and home Bible classes is necessary because people must have a human instrument to show them what the Word says. He notes that although one young man isolated in the Canadian wilderness for a winter read the Bible and came to salvation by spring, that is rare. Romans asks how they can believe unless someone proclaims. The Ethiopian eunuch likewise asked Philip, “How can I understand unless some other man tell me?” This is the whole concept of the Scriptures. Les also connects it to II Corinthians, verses 17–18: the one who glories should glory in the Lord, because the Lord has to open hearts, and it is whom the Lord commends, not the one who commends himself, that is approved.
