Les Feldick Bible Study

Why do we need to teach Sunday school and home Bible classes if people can read the Bible themselves?

Because Scripture teaches belief comes through proclamation: Romans asks how people can believe unless someone proclaims, and God uses human instruments. While one rare man read the Bible alone and was saved, people generally need a teacher to show them what the Word says, just as the Ethiopian eunuch needed Philip to explain it.

Les explains that the isolated case of the young man in the Canadian wilderness, who had only a Bible for a winter and came to salvation by spring, was rare. Romans says, "How can they believe unless someone proclaim it?" God has chosen to use human instruments. That is why Sunday school classes and home Bible classes are taught: people need a human instrument to show them what the Word says. The Ethiopian eunuch in Acts chapter 8 illustrates this when he asked Philip, "How can I understand unless some other man tell me?" Les also notes that the Lord has to open hearts, and approval comes from the Lord, not from self-commendation.

Romans 10:14

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Can a person get saved by just reading the Bible alone with no one to tell them?

It is rare for a person to come to salvation without any human instrument, though it can happen — as with a young man who was stranded alone in the Canadian wilderness for a whole winter with only a Bible and by spring had come to a knowledge of salvation.
