Had Israel been totally set aside when Paul wrote about the Gentile collection?

No, Israel had not been totally set aside at that time. The Temple was still operating, Israel was still in the land, and Jewish believers in Jerusalem were destitute, relying on Gentile material support because they had shared spiritual things.

Les explains that as yet Israel had not been totally set aside. The Temple was still going, Israel was still in the land, and these Jewish believers were destitute. They had no welfare system, and the Temple priesthood certainly would not take care of them because they had embraced Jesus of Nazareth, whom the religious leaders detested. They were in an island of need, and their only hope was the collection from the Gentile believers as it would be sent to Jerusalem. Since the Gentiles had been made partakers of Israel's spiritual things, their duty was to minister to them in carnal or material things.
