How fast would God drive out the Canaanites for Israel?

God would not drive the Canaanites out all at once. He would expel them only as fast as Israel could occupy the land, so that wild animals would not take over before the Israelites arrived. He would clear them out just fast enough for Israel to inherit the homes, wells, and vineyards already prepared.

Les explains that God would not drive the Canaanites out all at once. If He did, Israel could not keep up, and wild animals might take over the land before the Israelites arrived. Instead, God would drive them out just fast enough for Israel to occupy what was already there: the homes the Canaanites had built, the wells they had dug, and the vineyards they had planted. All Israel had to do was go in and take it, because God would use hornets as well as other means to drive the Canaanites out.
