Whose righteousness does Christ declare through propitiation, and why?

Through propitiation, Christ declares His own righteousness, not the sinner’s. He becomes propitiation by faith in His blood, not by His life or miracles. This declaration is for the remission of sins that are passed, through God’s forbearance, so that Christ might be just and the justifier of the one who believes.

Les teaches that propitiation is a great big word people stumble over, but Paul says God set forth Christ Jesus as propitiation. Christ becomes our propitiation through faith in His blood, not through His life or His three years of exemplary miracle working. By this He declares His righteousness, not yours or mine, for the remission of sins that are passed through the forbearance of God. Verse 26 adds that He declares His righteousness so He might be just—fair—and the justifier of him that believeth; believing is faith.
