Is agreeing with the historical facts about Jesus the same as believing?

No. Agreeing with historical facts about Jesus—that He lived, died, and rose—is only head knowledge and is not the believing the Bible describes. True believing comes from the heart, not the head. The heart is the central part of a person that relates to the spirit world, where God begins and finishes His work.

Les explains that a common question is how someone knows they have believed enough. Many people assume that if they simply believe, they are all right. Most people, especially in our nation, believe the historical fact that Christ lived and died, and may even give head knowledge assent that He rose from the dead. But that is not believing, and it is not what is being talked about. Believing does not come from the head; it comes from the heart. Les points out that the Bible speaks of the heart in the chest area, as when stones were placed in a pouch on the chest because it was next to the heart. This is not the physical pumping organ, but the central part of us that has a relationship with the spirit world, where God must begin and finish His work. So agreeing with historical facts about Jesus is not the same as heart belief.
