Who makes the first move in salvation?

God makes the first move in salvation. Mankind, because of sin, will never seek God of his own volition; it is contrary to human makeup. As with Adam and Eve hiding, God had to find them. Salvation begins with God's initiative, not human effort. This remains unchanged.

Les explains that when Adam and Eve sinned, they hid from God rather than running to meet Him. God had to find them. This pattern has never changed: mankind will never, of his own volition, go looking for God; it is contrary to our makeup. Therefore God has to make the first move. Les clarifies this does not mean extreme Calvinism, where God has already picked out who He will save and who He won't. He disagrees with that, because the work of the cross was sufficient for everybody. He uses the illustration of the door to the sheepfold in John 10, noting it is at ground level, not beyond anybody's reach. Yet salvation still has to begin with God.
