What happens when we understand the first five commandments?

When we understand the first five commandments, we become aware of how God approaches us from His point of view, and it is intrinsic for us to love Him with all our heart, soul, and mind. They reveal Him as supreme God, Creator, and establisher of the home.

Les explains that Jesus, when asked about the great commandment, summarized the law by saying to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, and mind. That first commandment, Jesus said, refers to the first five of the Ten Commandments. When we are aware of these first five commandments—how God approaches us from His point of view—it is intrinsic for us to love Him. We realize He is the supreme God, He will not give in to competition from idols, He created everything, and He set up the home. That is why Les places the father and mother with the first five, because the home is part and parcel of God's whole plan for the ages.
