Why does knowing the first five commandments lead us to love God?

The first five commandments reveal God as the supreme Creator who will not share His place with idols and who established the home. Seeing how He approaches us from His point of view makes love for Him the intrinsic response—honoring Him as God leads the heart to love Him.

In Matthew 22, a lawyer tests Jesus by asking which is the great commandment in the law. Jesus answers that the first and great commandment is to love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, soul, and mind, and the second is like it: love thy neighbor as thyself. Les explains that when Jesus says to love God with all the heart, He is referring to the first five commandments. Those commandments show how God is approaching us from His point of view. When we realize He is the supreme God, that He will not give in to competition from idols, that He created everything, and that He set up the home, the intrinsic response is to love Him. Les therefore places father and mother with the first five, because the home is part and parcel of God's whole plan for the ages.
