What kind of leadership did the seventy men receive?

The seventy men received spiritual leadership empowered by God’s Spirit. God took of the Spirit that was upon Moses and put it upon them, enabling them to share the burden of the people. This was not merely natural or fleshly leadership like Jethro’s advice; it was divinely given authority.

Les explains that God said He would come down, talk with Moses, take of the Spirit that was upon Moses, and put it upon the seventy. They would thereby bear the burden of the people with Moses, so he would not bear it alone. Les contrasts this with Jethro’s earlier counsel: that was a high moral example, but it was natural and of the flesh. After Moses let Jethro depart, God came back and said this is how it would be done: He would give these seventy men the power, the same qualities of spiritual leadership Moses had from the beginning.

Numbers 11:17

And I will come down and talk with thee there: and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.
