Why were seven men chosen in Acts 6:3?

Seven men were chosen because the early Jewish church in Jerusalem was facing problems, and the assembly needed trusted men to oversee the matter. They had to be of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, and appointed over that business.

Les explains that the early Jewish church at Jerusalem was finally having some problems. In verse 3, the instruction was to choose out seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, whom they may appoint over this business. Verse 5 says the saying pleased the whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and full of the Holy Spirit. Les emphasizes the Holy Spirit’s prominence here, noting two mentions in just two verses. Later, Stephen’s face appeared like an angel, showing the presence of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 6:3

Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business.
