What does Exodus 16:23 say about the seventh day?

Exodus 16:23 states that the next day—the seventh day—is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the Lord. It also instructs the people to bake and boil what they would, and to lay up any remainder to be kept until the morning.

Les explains that Exodus 16:23 occurs before the law is given, which won't happen until chapter 20. God institutes the Sabbath ahead of the law by commanding a double portion of manna on the sixth day. The seventh day is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the Lord. This mirrors Genesis, where God created in six days and rested on the seventh, establishing a pattern of six days of labor and one day of rest. Les notes it wasn't that God was tired, but He set this up for man's own good, and that principle carries into our own economy—we need one day out of seven for rest.

Exodus 16:23

And he said unto them, This is that which the LORD hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy sabbath unto the LORD: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.
