How much manna were the Israelites to gather on the sixth day before the law was given?

Before the law was given, God commanded Israel to gather a double portion of manna on the sixth day. This extra amount provided for the seventh day, because He instituted the Sabbath in advance, teaching that the seventh day was to be a holy rest unto the Lord.

Les explains that in Exodus 16, before the law is given—which does not happen until chapter 20—God institutes a commandment that on the sixth day they shall gather a double portion of manna. This is because He is going to institute the Sabbath even before He gives the law. Les connects this to Genesis chapter 1, where God brought everything onto the scene in six days and then rested on the seventh, setting up six days of labor and one day of rest. That rest was not because God was tired, but for man’s own good, and Les suggests it carries into our own economy: God still knows we need one day out of seven for rest. In Exodus 16:23, Moses says tomorrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto the Lord; they are to bake and boil what they will, and lay up what remains until the morning.

Exodus 16:14

And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.
