What is the loophole that lets us escape dying for our own sin?

The loophole is dying in the person of Christ on the cross by identification, by faith, and by trust—believing that when He died, I died and you died. Because the soul that sins must surely die, this identification allows the believer to escape dying for his own sin and to share in Christ’s resurrection.

Les explains that the human race is born in sin and faces no alternative but death, since God told Adam and Eve that the day they ate they would surely die, and Ezekiel later said the soul that sinneth shall surely die. But there is a loophole: a person can die in the person of Christ on the cross by identification, by faith, and by trust, believing that when He died, I died and you died. Paul states that if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death—if we honestly believe He died my death—then we shall also be with Him in resurrection. Les ties this to the seed analogy: a seed must die and germinate to bring new life, and springtime pictures death, burial, and resurrection. For the believer, death is glorious and the best is yet to come; for those without this identification, death is something to be feared. He also notes the old man is the old Adam we are born with.
