What happened spiritually between God and Israel when Joseph's brothers sold him into Egypt?

When Joseph's brothers sold him into Egypt, Israel became spiritually separated from God. They were alienated and ended up in Egyptian bondage without an altar, sacrifice, or worship. This was the consequence of that sin. God therefore had to buy them back and redeem them.

Les explains that Israel was God's covenant people, but by virtue of the sin of Joseph's brothers in selling him into Egypt, they were spiritually separated from God. He lost them, and they ended up down in Egypt in bondage, without an altar, without a sacrifice, without a worship, and totally alienated. Because of this, God would have to buy them back and redeem them, which is why Exodus is the book of redemption.
