What was the outcome for those who did not respond to the gospel versus those who did?
Those who did not respond to the gospel faced spiritual death as their end result. Those who did respond received life to life. The same message was a sweet saver of Christ, potential salvation to the perishing, and grace to those who embraced it.
Les explains that the believer is a sweet saver of Christ to God both in those who are saved and in those who are perishing. The saved are recipients of God's grace. The perishing are not necessarily already lost; they still had opportunity to hear Him preach the Gospel, and He was good news to them just as to those who had already embraced it. Les teaches that if they did not respond, spiritual death was their end result. But to those who did respond, the message was life to life. He closes with the question, who is sufficient for these things?
To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
