Where are Macedonia and Athens in relation to Greece and Turkey?
Macedonia is northern Greece, while Athens is in southern Greece. The Aegean Sea lies between Turkey and the mainland of Europe, separating Turkey from these Greek regions. Macedonia and Athens are therefore located in Greece, not Turkey, with Macedonia to the north and Athens to the south.
Les explains that if you picture the Mediterranean Sea and Turkey as it winds out to the west, Paul's early ministry was in the western half of present-day Turkey, called Asia Minor. Between Turkey and the mainland of Europe is the Aegean Sea. On the European side, Macedonia is northern Greece, and Athens is in southern Greece. Going around that peninsula leads into the Adriatic Sea, and across from that is Rome. Les also notes that Choas was on the western shore of present-day Turkey, up toward Constantinople or the Dardanelles Straits.
