What was the Law like according to Les?
The Law was cold stone: severe, condemning, and powerless to help anyone keep it. Though perfect, it was weak. It functioned like a mirror that reveals what is wrong and needs cleaning but cannot reach out to cleanse or empower a person.
Les explains that the Law sat there in cold stone, with nothing warm or cuddly about it. It was severe and condemned, but it did nothing to help the person keep it. He clarifies that the Law was not imperfect; the Ten Commandments were perfect, yet they were powerless. Les likens the Law to a mirror: it can show you what is wrong and needs cleaning up, but it cannot reach out and clean you. It is helpless and weak. By contrast, the indwelling Holy Spirit becomes our guideline for Christian living—not a set of rules and regulations, but His influence and power, giving us the desire to live pleasing in God's sight.
