What was the Law like when God first gave it?
When God first gave the Law, it was perfect, holy, and righteous. Its full purity and righteousness were perfect. The Law itself was holy and righteous as originally given, though later the Apostle Paul describes it as weak and beggarly in the context of Gentiles returning to bondage.
Les explains that in Romans 8, the righteousness or the full purity of the Law, as God first gave it, was perfect, holy, and righteous. However, in Galatians 4, Paul addresses Gentile believers who were turning back to the weak and beggarly elements of the Law. Les points out that the Law was weak and beggarly in the sense that it brought bondage, and Paul was horrified that believers who had tasted grace would want to return to it. The whole thrust of Galatians was to prove that Gentile believers were not under the Mosaic Law but under grace.
That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
