How did Saul escape Damascus?
Saul escaped Damascus when his friends let him down the city wall in a basket in the middle of the night, on the back side away from the main road. They did this because death threats against him had become heavy and people were trying to kill him.
Les explains that God did not simply appear to Saul in a vision and tell him to leave by the front gate. Instead, God waited until the death threats became so heavy that Saul heard warnings from more than one direction. His friends then lowered him over the wall in a basket at night, not on the side where the main road ran but evidently on the back side of Damascus. Les reminds his classmates how dark it was two thousand years ago, without street lights, and Saul had to find his way knowing people were out to kill him. That was the way God did it. From Damascus, God took him down to Mount Sinai in Arabia, as Saul later tells us in Galatians chapter 1—the same place where God gave the Law to Moses—where God would give him the doctrines of grace, which Paul usually calls the Revelation of the Mysteries.
