What happened to Saul on the road to Damascus?

As Saul journeyed near Damascus, a light from heaven suddenly shone around him, and he fell to the earth. He heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" Saul answered, "Who art thou, Lord?" The speaker was the Lord from heaven.

Les teaches that Saul was the Pharisee and religious fanatic who was yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord. He went to the high priest and obtained letters to the synagogues at Damascus so that if he found any Jews, men or women, who followed Jesus of Nazareth, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. As he journeyed and came near Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. He fell to the earth and heard a voice saying, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" Saul asked, "Who art thou, Lord?" Les explains that the Lord here was Jehovah, and Saul had such awe for the name that he knew this voice came from the presence of God, even though he asked, "Who art thou, Lord?"
