Why did Jesus perform so many miracles during His earthly ministry?

Jesus performed many miracles to prove to the Jew that He was who He said He was. Israel required a sign, so His miracles functioned as signs. The seven miraculous signs recorded in John each carried a trainload of truth for the nation of Israel.

Les explains that I Corinthians 1:22 says the Jews require a sign, and he notes that Israel had been demanding signs all the way back to Moses. When God called Moses, He gave signs—such as the shepherd's rod becoming a serpent—not primarily for Pharaoh's benefit but to prove to Moses and Aaron that God would do the supernatural and bring Israel out of Egypt. Les teaches that this pattern of the supernatural runs through Israel's history and into Christ's earthly ministry. Jesus performed miracle after miracle to prove to the Jew that He was who He said He was. The Book of John records seven miraculous signs, and each had a trainload of truth for the nation of Israel.
