Why does God give the word of wisdom and word of knowledge?
God gives the word of wisdom and word of knowledge because the Church needed them. He provides men with these particular abilities through the same Holy Spirit, distributing them to believers in the congregation for the benefit of the body, not for self-selected status or personal ambition.
Les explains that the gifts are not for us to choose or demand. He says we should not go to God and say, 'I want this gift or that gift,' but instead take the gift God has given us and say, 'Lord, here I am. I'm available. Use me,' letting Him direct us. In verse 8, the Spirit gives to one believer the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, but both come by that same Holy Spirit. These are things the Church needed, and God is providing men with these particular abilities. Les also notes that God directs through open and closed doors and impresses the Word by prayer.
