Had God already created the animals before Adam named them?
Yes. The context states that God had already created the animal kingdom before Adam named them. In Genesis chapter 2, God formed every beast out of the ground and brought the creatures to Adam to see what he would call them, and Adam named them.
Les teaches that God had already created the animal kingdom before the naming event, then directs attention to Genesis 2:19, where God formed every beast out of the ground and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. All the created creatures came before Adam, and he named them. Les also notes that after this, no helpmeet was found for Adam, and he imagines Adam seeing the animals with their mates and feeling lonely.
And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
