Why should you know what you believe?
You should know what you believe so you are not blown over by every wind of doctrine or false teacher. Standing on the Gospel keeps you grounded, confirms you are saved, and prevents believing in vain, so you need not worry about eternity. This Gospel is your salvation.
Les explains that the Gospel was preached, received, and is the ground on which a believer stands. When a person believes it, they will not be blown over by every little wind of doctrine or every false teacher that comes along. Standing on this Gospel means not having to worry about eternity. The Gospel is the means by which one is saved. Les stresses that “saved” is a Scriptural word, not a denominational word, and means being saved from something. His analogy is that an inheritance can save a bankrupt man, but here we are saved from eternal doom; this Gospel is our salvation. He warns believers to keep in memory what was preached, lest they believe in vain—know what you believe.
By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
